The Team: The Supervisor Quality Assurance position is part of the American Girl DeForest Distribution Center team.  

The Opportunity:  The Supervisor Quality Assurance provides direct supervision of and support for all regular and seasonal employees working in quality assurance areas and to ensure that daily work volume is completed, and staff is supported with appropriate tools, systems, and supplies.  This position serves as the primary trouble shooter for Mattel/AG QA systems, processes, and equipment, to ensure consistency and accuracy. Also, this individual is responsible to control product release and quarantine procedures for the Mattel US DCs in order to maintain product quality and regulatory compliance.  

What Your Impact Will Be: 

50% Quality Assurance/Management Systems:

  • Works with the Development teams to coordinate and pull QC samples for use across all Mattel US DCs.
  • Pulls US domestically produced product samples and works with Manager to identify required testing paperwork.  If the product requires testing, manages the flow of products by placing them on hold and coordinating sample transfer to outside lab for testing.
  • Coordinates compliance related rework projects by ensuring that the non-conforming units are clearly identified and quarantined according to Mattel General Quality Management Procedures (GQMP).
  • As the GQMPs change or are updated, ensures AG process complies and new procedures are communicated to impacted departments.
  • Assists QE US/MOA teams and plants/ vendors to identify root cause and corrective actions through defect analysis data and product samples.
  • Participates in special projects as required such as roll out of sharp point procedures across all Mattel US DCs, roll out of rework procedures, etc.  
  • Evaluates product complexity and monitors quality performance of vendors and SKUs to determine inspection requirements on incoming shipments.  
  • Coordinates/documents the quality compliance process that includes inspection and testing verification from MOA /domestic suppliers/apparel vendors.
  • Ensures all testing is complete prior to product being shipped to AG by verifying container information in the MATTEL verification database and/or the product status in AG/AGHK verification spreadsheet.
  • Coordinates the movement of product between locations if product requires a quarantine status.
  • Quality confirms all shipments after testing confirmation is complete.  Releases product from QA hold in order to move the product through the channels.
  • Coordinates the data collection and provides departments (production, Inventory Planning, Distribution, Receiving) with status updates of product within the compliance testing process to ensure product isn't pulled before it has been released from quality hold.
  • Creates and maintains quarantine/hold data to track product issues and disposition documentation. 
  • Ensures equipment is in working order.  Works with the appropriate equipment/systems contact to implement updates and address equipment/system failures/issues.
  • Evaluates inventory for quality issues identified during defect analysis and initiates product review as appropriate. Initiates corrective actions with MAPS and Tech if required. 

50% Supervision:

  • Ensures efficient and productive daily operations by monitoring, prioritizing, and directing employee activities to meet company needs and achieve department performance goals and deadlines.  
  • Analyzes workload and makes adjustments of departmental resources as necessary when workload fluctuates or significantly varies from forecast.  
  • Develops short and long term goals for direct reports.
  • Effectively communicates goals, direction, priorities, responsibilities, and expectations to direct reports.
  • Provides regular, timely feedback to direct reports (HTRAC, reinforce positive accomplishments, effectively identify and address performance issues). 
  • Helps to make hiring decisions for the department as well as decisions regarding disciplinary action based upon performance criteria with HR consultation and support.
  • Communicates department concerns and employee issues with Manager as needed.
  • Trains staff on department procedures, processes and how to operate equipment.

Other job complexities:

  • Balance resources to meet fluctuations in workloads areas across the Mattel US DCs; Appropriately provide performance feedback.; Inform Manager of any equipment/system failures or resource needs; Balancing quality related projects with the daily quality assurance tasks; Accurately clearing product so that additional rework or releasing of non-conforming units are minimized.
  • Balancing business needs while maintaining process and product compliance requirements. May require negotiating a win-win solution (for the customer and the Company).   This person will be responsible for giving the business units feedback on product status.  There is a lot of pressure to get product moving and this person is regularly challenged to keep that in mind while maintaining compliance on numerous regulatory requirements.
  • May need to supervise and train seasonal staff during peak receiving season.  May also need to travel to off site DC locations as needed to train and/or check in.

What We’re Looking For: 

Special Certifications/Technical Skills:

  • Engineering, Quality, or Management degree required or equivalent job experience.  
  • 3-5 years minimum comparable job experience with minimum one year supervisory experience.

  • Ability to analyze data and make recommendations
  • Ability to motivate and provide feedback to local and remote staff.
