The Team:   

The Brand Creative Operations team manages all asset creation for packaging graphics, structure, e-commerce, and instruction sheets. This is a highly creative and collaborative team that seeks best in class solutions reacting to a changing retail and toy-buying environment Expect a dynamic and fast-paced role where you get to influence design and be a part of bringing smiles to kids across the globe.  


The Opportunity:

Mattel is currently seeking a Packaging Designer in East Aurora, NY. This role will be a member of a dynamic and collaborative team of Graphic Designers, Structural Engineers and Copywriters focused on creating assets for packaging and ecommerce across a variety of categories. The packaging designer will be involved in the packaging design process from concept to final printed packaging. This position reports directly into the Packaging Manager.

Your Impact:

  • Responsible for the communication of graphics on toy packaging and for ecommerce from concept to production for assigned categories within the Fisher-Price brand portfolio.
  • Work on and oversee more than one brand category.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to junior design team members and delegating tasks as needed.
  • Will work closely with internal mktg./design/engineering departments and overseas counterparts to produce high quality, creative packaging designs.
  • Partner with our on-site photo studio to art direct final photography for package and ecommerce assets.
  • Direct illustration for packaging through outside vendors or our Hong Kong team.
  • Attend and participate in the weekly cross-functional team meetings.
  • Communicate with the Hong Kong/China based packaging teams on production issues. 
  • Understands how to monitor and follow packaging and ecommerce status schedules to keep projects on time. 
  • Available for occasional off-site meetings as required.
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends and innovation in package design/development.
  • Team with on-site staff to prepare 3D package samples (Comps) for assigned brands.
  • Present concepts and design strategies to cross-functional team members and management.

What We’re Looking For: 

  • 4-8 years of graphic design experience
  • Consumer Goods Packaging Experience a plus. 
  • Toy experience preferred but not mandatory.
  • Ability to transform business objectives into high quality, creative design concepts.
  • Computer Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop CC2019 as well as MS Office.
  • Experience in 3D rendering software is a plus (Maya, Keyshot, etc) or willingness to learn/experiment with new software and apply it.
  • Ability to work with outside licensors and cultivate relationships
  • Ability to work with internal and external style guides and apply as necessary.
  • Working knowledge of type manipulation, photography, mechanical art production.
  • Strong aesthetic skills.
  • Graphic design skills which can be applied against potential projects like cross sells, point of sale displays and related promotional graphics. 
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Well-developed project management skills.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to work with individuals at all levels.
  • Strong Presentation skills.
  • Illustration/sketching skills a plus.
  • Work closely with oversees team to help direct mechanical build
  • Print production knowledge is important but not vital to the role.
